Bringing Sledge Hockey to Orangeville: A Milestone for Accessibility and Inclusion
In addition to his dedication to accessibility advocacy, Robert Jeffrey, founder of Impactability, is also a passionate sledge hockey player. His commitment to creating more inclusive public spaces extends beyond his consulting work—he actively champions accessibility in recreational activities, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can participate in sports and community programs.
Last summer, Robert, alongside the founder of Branching Out Support Services, presented the idea of introducing sledge hockey to both the Town of Orangeville and the Town of Caledon. This initiative aimed to make local recreation programs more inclusive by providing adaptive equipment that allows individuals with mobility challenges to enjoy the sport of hockey. As a result of this advocacy, the Town of Orangeville approved and purchased sledges, marking a significant step toward accessibility in local sports.
While more details about the program are set to be announced in the coming weeks and months, the excitement surrounding this initiative is already building. Recently, a local photographer from the Orangeville Citizen captured a special moment of Robert and his young friend, Carter, trying out the newly assembled sleds for the first time. The image reflects the joy and impact of accessible sports, demonstrating firsthand how adaptive equipment can break down barriers and foster inclusivity in recreation.
Robert’s involvement in this project underscores Impactability’s mission—ensuring that accessibility is not just about meeting standards but about creating opportunities for everyone to participate fully in their communities. By helping to bring sledge hockey to Orangeville, he hopes to inspire other municipalities to follow suit and expand adaptive sports programs.
This initiative is just the beginning of what’s possible when advocacy, collaboration, and community engagement come together to make a difference. Stay tuned for further updates as the program rolls out, and as more individuals get the chance to experience the thrill of sledge hockey firsthand.
